In this series, I explored concrete as a material. I am fascinated by concrete structures and the various formwork, aggregates, metal reinforcing, and additives that come together to change the aesthetic appeal, composition, and compressive strength of concrete.
This work is a series of concrete cubes with suspended cores of building materials. Some of these materials are used in construction (nails, wood, insulation) while others are finish materials (glass, textiles, laminates). In each case, these cores represent the unseen or ignored parts of concrete buildings.
This piece was awarded Best in Show at the annual juried show, Upstate Artists, at the Laffer Gallery in Schuylerville, NY. A review of the show printed in the Times Union is available here.
